It doesn’t get much better than this … clear blue skies, 29 degrees, good smooth roads, cycling alongside the emerald green Mediterranean Sea. This has been one of my most memorable days of riding in Sicily.

Lena had prepared a simple but substantial breakfast for me, which I enjoyed while sitting at a table on the backyard patio. By 9 am I had bid arrivederci to Lena and her husband and was on my merry way.

As I rode past the Cava D’Aliga beach (there is no town centre) the fog was lifting from the sea, burned off by the sun to reveal a perfect warm, sunny day for the last day of spring.

Traffic on the main road was surprisingly heavy, so at the first opportunity (after about 8 Km) I switched to my “safe and scenic”, slightly longer, alternative route that I had prepared. It couldn’t have been any better, hugging the Mediterranean and passing through Marina di Modica and then the pristine seaside town of Pozzallo.

Riding was easy along the flat roads and the scenery was spectacular nearly all the way, with the usual bougainvilleas lining the road and the emerald green sea on my right. Concentration was required to keep my eyes on the road ahead!

I was greeted at B&B Giosy by a little grey dog yapping his head off, but once he got to know me we became the best of friends. The lady who owns the B&B doesn’t speak English but she summoned her daughter who helped with the normal formalities (a secure place to leave my bicycle, breakfast time, wi-fi access, and a recommendation for the evening meal).

So having now freshened up and attended to some correspondence, I am off to explore this lovely little town by the sea.
