Everyone has a story. Today’s heading was inspired by an 87 year old man who came over to chat to us this morning while we were taking the opportunity on our rest day to give our trusty bikes some well-deserved love (cleaning and maintenance). As a child he used to ride on a fixed-wheel bike 20 miles to school and then 20 miles home again, with a steep hill on the way. Even now he swims 100 x 25 m laps twice a week as well as playing tennis twice a week. He loved hearing about our ride all the way to Melbourne and just talking to him has inspired and encouraged us.

Afterwards we went for a leisurely stroll through Ulladulla, stopping at the Tea-Tree Cafe for our customary morning fix of flat white and extra hot chai latte.

After exploring the town on foot, we found a bike shop where a very obliging young man gave us a small screw that was missing from Kevin’s bike and spent some time tuning the brakes so that they are now working perfectly. He reluctantly accepted payment for his labour.

Following a healthy lunch of fruit and nuts, we caught up with our correspondence and then headed down to the nearby harbour with our handlines to fish off the breakwater wall. It was a thrill catching three different varieties of fish (snapper, tailor and bream) but unfortunately as you can see from the photo they were much too small to keep.

Dinner last night was so good we went back to the bowling club again tonight and had the same meal.

We have enjoyed our rest day in Ulladulla and our bodies and bikes are now recharged ready for Stage 6 to Malua Bay tomorrow.

Sounds like adventure prevents dementia! I think both you and he are onto something ☺

Do you remember Ulladulla when we were only little, Kevin? We were in the Fargo ute, I think and as
Dad was driving us through the bushland of trees, closer to the beach, I was frightened lest he didn’t know the way and we were lost. It seemed so isolated and forsaken. Eventually we camped overnight there. Love and safe riding, Nancy.

    • You have a better memory than me Nancy … maybe the dementia has already set in! I can just remember the brown Fargo ute, but not ever staying in Ulladulla. It is quite a nice town now and we enjoyed our rest day there yesterday. Love, Kevin
