“I hate going to the gym, so sweating outdoors sure beats sitting on a stationary bike staring at my navel” ~ Tom Selleck

Riding into a stiff headwind is hard work, so today’s stage from Stege to Faxe seemed a lot further than the 64 Km recorded by my Garmin GPS. However, I shouldn’t complain about the weather on this trip because at least every day has been fine.

For the first 6 Km after leaving Stege there was only a narrow shoulder of a fairly busy secondary road to ride on, so care had to be taken not to stray over the white line into the heavy traffic. Just as I was beginning to wonder whether this was still Denmark, I came to a perfectly smooth, segregated, cycle path that continued for 4 Km until the Queen Alexandrine Bridge connecting Møn Island with mainland Denmark. It was with a tinge of sadness I found myself leaving the beautiful island of Møn.

After reaching the mainland the route followed traffic-free tertiary roads that passed through lovely countryside, dominated as usual by wheat crops, and through a string of peaceful little towns. At the 33 Km point the magical town of Præstø came into view, with houses so colourful it was like I was back on the island of Burano in Italy. Many of the houses were adorned by lovely hollyhocks and roses along the roadside.

As if somebody had waved a magic wand, the wind seemed to die down immediately after I left Præstø. Or was it that I had found a burst of energy after eating a rum, raisin and walnut ice-cream cone? In any event I was able to make up time and right on 2 pm I arrived at the delightful, timber-framed, country cottage where I am staying tonight. Waiting to greet me was my host Gitte and her two very exuberant American Cocker Spaniel dogs.

Now I am going to ride 7 Km into the town of Faxe where Gitte tells me there is a very good Pizzeria-Ristorante, then back to the country cottage to spend some time with my new canine friends. More magic!

Hello Kevin. Your route I mostly went on my Swedish tour. You will certainly take some pictures in Stevns Klint tomorrow. Really worth seeing. The area there is quite hilly and mostly very windy. But i think you’re strong enough. Have a good trip – Rolf. (Do you overnight with Warm Showers)

    • Hello Rolf. Thanks for the tip about Stevns Klint. My route turns north at Højerup but if it is not raining (which is forecast) I will make the 1 Km detour to see it.
I have been doing mainly AirBNB on this trip and have stayed at some great places, like the country cottage last night about 7 Km from Faxe. Cheers, Kevin

I like going to the gym sweaty everything. The gym beats riding in the rain and wind.
