“I do not own a car, and my main form of travel to Westminster and in my constituency is by bicycle. I also take my bike on trains to meetings in other parts of the country, which enables me to see other cities and the other parts of the country.” ~ Jeremy Corbyn

The scenery from Oranienburg to Fürstenberg was pleasant enough, although after a while the green grass, green trees, green water, and grey sky tend to become a bit monotonous. When I wasn’t cruising through forests I was riding on a smooth path alongside the Havel River or skirting one of the many lakes in this area.

Most of the paths were well-paved, but there was one stretch of dirt path for about a Km through the forest. The route passed through a couple of unpretentious little villages, whose main streets are paved with the dreaded cobblestones, just to give my poor old bones and my poor old bike a bit of a shaking.

Riding into a head-wind for most of the 74 Km, I felt I had done a solid day’s work by the time I had reached my destination. It was one of those days when you just have to put your head down, get into a rhythm, and keep plugging away. At least I will sleep well tonight!

Navigation has not been an issue at all, because I just follow the burgundy-coloured line on the GPS device mounted on the handlebars in front of me. It even takes me right to the door of my accommodation. In some places the track is quite convoluted and not always well-signed, so I feel sorry for those using old-fashioned paper maps. Stopping and checking maps all the time is not my idea of fun, you are much better off with a Garmin GPS receiver.

Fürstenberg is another lovely little German town, surrounded by the three lakes Röblinsee, Baalensee, and Schwedtsee, all of which are connected by the Havel River. Riding through the main street my first impressions were not overwhelming, but then I was stunned by the quality of the houses in the side streets. You can’t always tell a book by its cover!

Fürstenberg marks the end of the Brandenburg Stage of the Berlin to Copenhagen trail and tomorrow I begin the Mecklenburg Stage. It is all going to flash by too quickly.
